I started match fishing about 28 years ago, when I had hair. (Some today still remember those halcyon days). Learning from anglers like Del Root, John Wilkinson, Andrew Partridge and Bob Taylor, competing on both rivers and canals.

For years I spent most of the season fishing team matches, winter league, summer leagues, nationals etc. Normally scratching out a few pounds of fish from a near barren piece of water. However in 1999 I found a liking for commercial fisheries and over the next couple of years these venues became my choice.

Now I rarely fish in a team, canal or river, and since being sponsored by G.O.T baits, I focus on pellet and paste waters. I used to run open matches on the Grand Union for about ten years, but the LAA giving up London stretches, dwindling attendances and the lack of fish in all pegs made this pointless task to continue.

Pellet Fished Over Depth - Roy Makins

Since using GOT baits I have found their quality and consistency excellent, and above all the fish like eating them. Fishing over a bed of dampened micro pellets at Lake John main lake can bring in quality fish. Tench up to 5lbs, Bream up to 6lbs and the carp can be caught over 35lbs. I myself have had several carp up to 25lb on the pole. That is what I call having your elastic pulled.

Favourite Method - Pellet fished over depth.
Choose a line that you think the fish will come to and feed enough to get them to stay. The amount depends on the time of the year and water temperature. Mick Wilkinson Diamond floats are brilliant for this.

I choose one just heavy enough for the depth and wind speed to hold the bait still. Hook lengths are dependent on the conditions, but don’t fish too light or you will lose too many and the fish will go!

The trick on feeding is to keep putting enough pellets in either by pole pot or catapult to stop them coming up from the bottom. Ideally you only require being an inch ort two over depth, but this may change if the conditions dictate. Keep thinking and judging what they want and you all can regularly have a good day fishing.

Tight Lines and I’ll see you on the bank.

(Not at the bank – withdrawing money? (Wife’s comment!!))
